Converged Virtual 5G RAN – Concept or Reality?

Azcom joins 5G-CORAL Consortium to further progress in 5G

Azcom technology continues its involvement in the 5G research by participating in 5G-CORAL project that is part of the European H2020 5G Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP) Infrastructure. This project aims to deliver a convergent 5G multi-RAT access through an integrated virtualised edge and fog solution that is flexible, scalable, and interoperable with other domains including transport (fronthaul, backhaul), core and clouds.

5G-CORAL is a European and Taiwanese consortium, composed of industry and academic partners, that has launched activities towards the development of a system model that includes use cases, requirements, architecture, and business models. The consortium comprises 10 partners, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Ericsson AB, InterDigital Europe, Telecom Italia, Telcaria Ideas, SICS Swedish ICT AB, Azcom Technology, Industrial Technology Research Institute Incorporated, ADLINK, and National Chiao Tung University.

5G-CORAL project leverages the pervasiveness of edge and fog computing in the Radio Access Network (RAN) to create a unique opportunity for access convergence. This is envisioned by means of virtualized networking and computing solution where virtualized functions, context-aware services, and user/third-party applications are blended together to offer enhanced connectivity and better quality of experience.

The solution proposes two major building blocks:

  • The Edge and Fog Computing System (EFS) subsuming all the edge and fog computing substrate offered as a shared hosting environment for virtualized functions, services, and applications.
  • The Orchestration and Control System (OCS) responsible for managing and controlling the EFS, including its interworking with other (non-EFS) domains.

The 5G-CORAL project concepts will be validated in three testbeds (i) shopping mall in Taiwan, (ii) high-speed train in Taiwan, and (iii) connected cars in Taiwan and Italy.

Azcom Technology will mainly focus on development of the connected car test-bed. “Azcom has the expertise and competence to help the consortium in the development of 5G test-beds and software solutions” said Dr. Satish Ananthaiyer, EVP of Business Development.
